GT's ASCE Student Chapter Completes an Impressive 2011 Season

Congratulations to Georgia Tech's ASCE Student Chapter on their impressive 2011 season!

The GT team competed against nine southeastern schools at the annual Carolinas Conference regional competition held at NC State University in April. Tech stung Clemson, NC State, and others in every category of the Steel Bridge competition, which earned them a spot to compete at Nationals. Tech also made an impressive impact in the other regional competitions, finishing 1st in Surveying, T-shirt Design, and Tug-of-War. In addition, the GT women's team won 1st place in the Concrete Canoe. By the end of the Carolinas Conference, Tech earned 2nd place as Overall Champions.

Mr. Roger Mock and Ms. Kinzie Rieckmann served as team leaders. Clint Pichon, Ross Whiting and Spencer Adams served as Steel Bridge co-captains, and Noah Carlson and James Stephens were co-captains of the Concrete Canoe team.

The National Student Steel Bridge competition was held at Texas A&M at the end of May. GT's Steel Bridge team won 1st place in Display, 3rd place in Lightness, and 4th place Overall out of 48 teams competing.  Unfortunately, the team missed 3rd place by a very narrow margin, $50,000, but the students had great time competing. Team captain Spencer Adams said, "We are really proud of how we did and wish Professor Larry Kahn could have been there to cheer with us."  Dr. Kahn serves as the ASCE Student Chapter Advisor. He is extremely dedicated to this student organization, providing tremendous support, advice, expertise, and encouragement to all of the CEE students who participate in the annual competitions.

Each member of the GT ASCE Student Chapter was a winner this year and CEE congratulates the team on a job well done.  Go Jackets!
