Santamarina to give Terzaghi Lecture, students to compete at ASCE Geo-Congress

Goizueta Foundation Faculty Chair and Professor Carlos J. Santamarina, Ph.D., Ing., A.M.ASCE, will present the Karl Terzaghi Lecture at the ASCE Geo-Institute's 2014 annual congress (Geo-Congress).

This year's theme is "GeoCharacterization and Modeling for Sustainability," and the Geo-Congress will be February 23-26 at the Atlanta Peachtree Plaza Hotel.

The Terzaghi Lecture has been given by an individual honored for their exemplary contributions to the field of geotechnical engineering for more than fifty years. This is the highest honor bestowed by the ASCE G-I to a geoprofessional each year. Prior Terzaghi Lecturers from Georgia Tech include Professor George F. Sowers in 1979 and Dr. G. Wayne Clough in 1994.

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) will offer technical tours of the newly renovated Mason Building geotechnical laboratories and the nearby Clough Center (February 26, 4-8 pm). And CEE undergraduate and geosystems graduate students will also participate in the “GeoChallenge!” competition involving construction of a reinforced earth wall.

Geo-Congress will offer technical and career information covering the broad geo-profession and how the issues of sustainability affect it. Topics to be discussed include:

  • What does sustainability in geotechnical engineering really mean?
  • How will sustainable designs impact the future of the geo-profession?
  • What are the latest practices and research in the field?

Over one thousand industry leaders, peers, and mentors will explore the new territory of sustainable geotechnical engineering and integrate innovative thinking into business practices. Attendees can design a custom program by selecting personalized learning opportunities from a wide variety of sessions:

  • 3 distinguished lectures: Terzaghi, Peck, and Seed.
  • 8 keynote lectures by prominent leaders in the geo-profession.
  • 6 special panel sessions.
  • 6 short courses.
  • 7 concurrent technical tracks packed with over 250 presentations about the latest practices and geotechnical research.
