A melting pot of experts with research interests as diverse as geotechnical engineering, termite burrowing, tree physiology, granular physics and soft robotics trickled in from around the world in late May for the First International Workshop on Bio-Inspired Geotechnics. The NSF-funded workshop brought together 60 experts from engineering and science research, as well as industry, to foster dialogue and collaborations to better establish the field of bio-inspired geotechnics.
Just days after a major earthquake struck central Mexico in September 2017, Alejandro Martinez, MSCE 2012, Ph.D. 2015, found himself at the site taking vital measurements of the disaster. “It was a shocking day for everyone,” Martinez says.
The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering honored its best teachers, researchers and staff Nov. 23 at the School’s annual awards reception. The accolades recognize the best classroom teaching, the top research efforts by faculty and students, and service excellence from School staff.
A team of scientists led by the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s Hermann Fritz has just returned from a four-day reconnaissance mission in South Carolina assessing damage after record-breaking rainfall flooded large swaths of the state. They found several of the dams they inspected failed before they were overtopped by water.
The U.S. deputy secretary of transportation spent Monday at Georgia Tech talking about transportation infrastructure and seeing some of the ways researchers are helping improve the design, monitoring and creation of that infrastructure. Victor Mendez’s visit included conversations with School of Civil and Environmental Engineering students and faculty members.
