Mr. Daniel is an Adjunct Instructor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and has been teaching the Geomatics course (formerly Plane Surveying) for the past 33 years at Georgia Tech. Mr. Daniel started his surveying career in the US Air Force where he was a geodetic surveyor during the Vietnam War.
He established geodetic control on classified radar facilities all over the world, and held a Top Secret security clearance. Mr. Daniel received his Bachelors degree from Southern Technical Institute in Civil Engineering Technology, and his Masters (Civil Engineering) from Tulane University. Bill is a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in 15 states and a Certified Photogrammetrist.
He is a senior owner of Lowe Engineers where he is the Chief Operating Officer.
Mr. Daniel published his thesis for his Masters “The Professional Land Surveyor’s Role in the Oil & Gas Industry”. Mr. Daniel’s real interest and passion is geodesy. In 1993 Mr. Daniel was invited to lecture in Moscow at the prestigious Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography. He spent a week lecturing to students and other professors from all over Russia on subjects such as geodetic control, horizontal datums, GPS, and inertial surveying systems.
Also, as the COO at Lowe Engineers, Mr. Daniel has been working under contract to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (formerly the Defense Mapping Agency) for the past 25 years performing classified and unclassified mapping using remote sensing technology.
Mr. Daniel has published and given numerous technical papers at conferences over the past 50 years.
| Master of Engineering (Civil Engineering) | Tulane University | 1983 |
| Bachelors of Civil Engineering Technology | Southern Technical Institute | 1978 |
| Defense Mapping School | Ft. Belvoir, VA | 1972 |
Since 1992, Mr. Daniel has taught nearly all of the thousands of graduates of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Because GT is an engineering school with its focus on engineering (as opposed to surveying), Mr. Daniel has kept his mission to exposing the civil and environmental engineering student to as much of the basics of surveying as possible… knowing that his students will be professional engineers… and not likely to become professional land surveyors or geodesists.
Also, with the support and guidance from Dr. Susan Burns, Mr. Daniel was able to have Georgia Tech purchase all new electronic Leica surveying instruments and GPS gear, plus a new drone for the Geomatics students’ labs.
