Global Engineering Leadership Program

The Global Engineering Leadership Program develops engineer-leaders: engineers who lead and contribute effectively to addressing global grand challenges and other societal problems, working effectively across cultures.

Students learn communication and leadership skills, gain a deeper understanding of civil and environmental engineering in a global context, and travel abroad for transformative global leadership experiences. 

The program aims to develop the following core competencies in the context of addressing global grand challenges:

  • Leadership
  • Problem solving, discovery, and definition
  • Interpersonal and intrapersonal communication 
  • Systems thinking and analysis
  • Cross-cultural awareness

Students may complete a Minor or Certificate.

Global Engineering Leadership Certificate

The Global Engineering Leadership Certificate is awarded to students who complete the following:

  1. Foundational course in leadership
  2. Leadership engineering course
  3. Two grand challenge courses that apply leadership skills and engineering knowledge to major global or local challenges.
  4. Biannual Hyatt Leadership Lecture

Global Engineering Leadership Minor

The Global Engineering Leadership Minor is awarded to students who complete the following:

  1. Foundational course in leadership
  2. Leadership engineering course
  3. Three grand challenge courses that apply leadership skills and engineering knowledge to major global or local challenges.
  4. Global Practicum (8-week internship, study, research or service learning abroad)
  5. Biannual Hyatt Leadership Lecture

Course Requirements

View the list of approved courses that are available to students interested in pursuing a certificate or minor. You must have completed 30 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater to enroll in the minor.

Funding for Travel

Global Engineering Leadership Minor students in CEE may apply for funding to partially support travel, facilitating engagement in one of the grand challenge courses, and a global practicum experience. Please note international travel funding is not exclusive to the Global Engineering Leadership Minor. Learn more about CEE's international travel funding options.

Grand Challenges Scholar Program

By completing the Global Engineering Leadership Minor, you will automatically fulfill the requirements for the College of Engineering's Grand Challenges Scholar Program. Upon graduation, you will receive a letter from the National Academy of Engineering recognizing you as a Grand Challenge Scholar.
