Ph.D. Student Junyue Wang Wins Gonter Research Paper Award

Monday, 01 May 2023

Ph.D. student Junyue "Holden" Wang has been awarded the Gonter Research Paper Award from the Division of Environmental Chemistry of the American Chemical Society. This prestigious award is the highest honor given to students by the Division of Environmental Chemistry and recognizes exceptional research contributions in the field.

Wang, who is advised by Turnipseed Family Chair and Professor Ching-Hua Huang, has made significant strides in the study of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in water treatment. His research focuses on comparing the formation of DBPs by two groups of disinfectants, peroxyacids and chlorine, in different water matrices. More importantly, Wang developed a pioneering mathematical model to quantitatively predict DBP formation kinetics, marking the first kinetic model for the simulation of DBP formation by peroxyacids. Wang's study has been submitted and is currently under peer-review for publication in the environmental journal Environmental Science & Technology.

To honor his outstanding achievement, Wang has been invited to present his paper at the C. Ellen Gonter Environmental Chemistry Awards Symposium in San Francisco during the fall ACS meeting which will take place from August 13-17, 2023. The event will also include a special reception celebrating Wang's accomplishments and showcasing his contributions to the field of environmental chemistry.
