Three new faculty members are joining the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, bringing with them a range of expertise in areas including environmental, structural, and transportation engineering.
Sofía Pérez-Guzmán
Assistant Professor
Pérez-Guzmán was previously a postdoctoral research associate at the Center for Infrastructure, Transportation, and the Environment at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her research is in disaster response logistics, food systems logistics, and urban freight transportation, with an overarching goal of increasing the social performance of supply chains. Pérez-Guzmán is currently focused on mitigating food deserts and making disaster relief distribution more beneficiary-oriented through analytical and empirical research. Pérez-Guzmán is the junior vice president of programs of the Minority Issues Forum of INFORMS, the co-lead editor of the OR/MS Tomorrow INFORMS magazine, incoming committee member at the INFORMS Membership and Member Services, and the incoming secretary for the POMS Latin America and Caribbean Chapter. She earned a Ph.D. and M.S. in Transportation Engineering and a M.S. in Economics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Danny Smyl
Assistant Professor
Before coming to Georgia Tech, Smyl was an assistant professor at the University of South Alabama. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas. Following, he was commissioned in the Marine Corps where he served as an Engineer Officer. After retiring from active-duty service, Smyl completed Ph.D. studies at North Carolina State University, investigating non-destructive characterization of cement-based materials and structures. During this time, Smyl traveled to Finland as a Fulbright Scholar researching inverse problems and machine learning in the Department of Applied Physics at the University of Eastern Finland. Thereafter, he worked as a Postdoc in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Aalto University and later as a lecturer in Structural Engineering at the University of Sheffield in the UK.
Shane Snyder
Professor and José Domingo Pérez Foundation Chair
Shane Snyder was previously the President’s Chair Professor of Water Technologies in the school of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. In addition to being a faculty member, Snyder also was the Executive Director of the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute at NTU. Prior to joining NTU, Snyder was Professor of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Water & Energy Sustainable Technology (WEST) center at the University of Arizona. Snyder’s research focuses on environmental sustainability under climate change scenarios. He specializes in water recycling for municipal and industrial purposes, and leads projects in the areas of waste material upcycling and resource recovery. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the American Chemical Society journal, Environmental Science & Technology Water and is a Fellow of the International Water Association. Snyder was featured among the top 25 leading water researchers globally by Lux Research and was recently featured as one of the top scientists in the field of Environmental Engineering in a report by Stanford University.
