Tech’s civil and environmental engineering graduate degrees again ranked among America’s best

New rankings, same story: A civil or environmental engineering graduate degree from Georgia Tech is one of the best in the country.

The 2020 list of engineering specialty programs from U.S. News and World Report released March 12 keeps both of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s graduate programs among the top four in the nation — extending a streak of distinction going back more than two decades.

Both programs are No. 4 in their disciplines.

“Our goal year in and year out is not to chase rankings but to pursue excellence,” said Donald Webster, Karen and John Huff School Chair. “We work to educate the next generation of visionary engineers who share our mission to improve the human condition and design a future where everyone can thrive. Still, it’s gratifying that our efforts continue to be recognized this way.”

The environmental engineering graduate program rose one spot from last year’s rankings into a three-way tie at No. 4. Civil engineering fell two spots to No. 4 — a bit of a deceptive drop after the program was tied with three other schools in the previous list. U.S. News bases its rankings of engineering disciplines on surveys of department heads around the country.

“Maintaining a rigorous program like ours really is a team effort, and so our continued success reflects the daily hard work of our faculty, staff and students along with the partnership and support of our alumni and friends,” Webster said.

Every graduate degree in the Georgia Tech College of Engineering is a top-10 program for the seventh year in a row in the U.S. News rankings. The College overall climbed one spot to No. 7.

The publication releases its assessment of graduate programs in March; undergraduate rankings typically come in September.
