The Board of Directors of the American Society of Civil Engineers bestowed its highest honor on two School of Civil and Environmental Engineering professors in March.
Georgia Tech Provost Rafael Bras and Professor Barry Goodno are two of the newest “distinguished members” of the society, an honor that recognizes their “acknowledged eminence” in their fields.
“I have been involved in ASCE for many years and have been privileged to serve in many leadership positions over this period,” Goodno said. “However, I have received much more in return from my involvement in ASCE and [ASCE’s Structural Engineering Institute] than I could possibly have given through my service.
“I am honored to receive this recognition and will continue to encourage all of my students to learn about and become active in ASCE.”
Distinguished membership in the society is a rare achievement: according to ASCE’s executive director, only 630 engineers in the group’s nearly two centuries of existence have been elevated to the status.
